BOXES FILLED WITH HOPE
Low-Income Chicagoans Receive Food at Marillac
On June 22, 2011, hundreds of West Side residents lined up outside Marillac Social Center's Food Pantry, located on the corner of Jackson and Francisco. Marillac's staff and 10 volunteers worked diligently to provide nearly 500 hungry families with Emergency Food Boxes.
This Emergency Food Box distribution was funded by the City of Chicago and administered through the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD), which is a local nonprofit food distribution and training center striving to end hunger in Chicago. Each Emergency Food Box contained non-perishable staple items, such as rice, cereal, tuna, peaches, green beans, and peanut butter. Clients also received frozen chicken and beef, as well as a variety of fresh organic produce items including lettuce, zucchini, and oranges.
Marillac House Food Pantry is a member agency of the GCFD's network of 650 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. The Food Pantry at Marillac is a "Client-Choice" facility, which means that clients select their own food rather than receiving a pre-packed food bag. The distributions are organized by food groups, such as protein, fruits and vegetables, and grains. The pantry strives to simulate a grocery store environment in order to make clients feel welcome and respected. This setup also encourages to clients to be more involved in planning nutritiously balanced meals. Additionally, a nurse is available at the food pantry to check blood pressure and blood, glucose levels and give referrals for medical services.
