Food Pantry
Marillac recently received recognition from the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) for demonstrating best practices in serving our clients. Marillac is a part of GCFD’s network of 650 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters.
Since January, we have served over 1,500 households, representing 4,229 people. This includes homeless individuals, single parents, grandparents raising their grandchildren, as well as physically and mentally challenged people on fixed incomes.
Nutrition Education
Teaches families how healthy eating contributes to the physical, intellectual and emotional wellbeing of children and adults. Participants are empowered to make informed decisions about the foods they choose and how they prepare them, which decreases their risk for chronic health problems associated with poor eating habits. They learn about:
- Reading & Understanding Food Labels
- Healthy Food Preparation
- Dietary Guidelines & “My Plate”
Client-Choice Facility
Our client-choice pantry is organized by food group and simulates a grocery store environment. This encourages clients to actively engage in the process of selecting their groceries and increases their involvement in planning nutritiously balanced meals.
Check-ups
A nurse is available to check clients' blood sugar and blood pressure. This increases clients' awareness of their health status, which provides them with an opportunity to proactively address health issues before they become acute or chronic medical conditions.
